The transport industry includes aviation and the automotive retail, service and repair sector of the automotive industry. The continuous technicological changes in light vehicles now and in the future make for exciting careers in the automotive industry. Almost all industries depend on transport for their operation. Increased use of new technologies and changing work practices highlight the need to have a highly competent workforce. TAFE SA qualifications in this area can lead to careers as: aircraft maintenance engineers, automotive technicians and managers.

TAFE SA Career Groups within Transport Engineering

Career Group Description
Automotive Workers These certificates improve graduates’ chances of becoming registered as an apprentice by an employer and progressing towards becoming a fully qualified tradesperson. Graduates of vocational education courses are highly competitive applicants for apprenticeship places as automotive electricians; mechanics; panel beaters; spray painters; trimmers; and detailers. These studies may also lead to employment in the highly competitive automotive parts and accessories field or as a trade assistant in a variety of workshops. Automotive qualifications include training in sales, administration, mechanical, vehicle body, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, electrical, and marine.
Aviation Industry Workers The Advanced Diploma provides students with the skills and knowledge required for the Air Transport industry in addition to General Aviation. Emphasis is placed on the development of skills and knowledge required by an airline pilot to enable graduates to act in support of professional staff. It should be noted that airline entry normally comes after several years experience of working in general aviation. The Certificate II provides students with a vocational introduction into the Aviation industry and provides them with productive skills and knowledge in the area of aircraft mechanics.
