There are many career opportunities in this area and the choices are going to become better for people with the right qualifications. Governments and communities are placing increasing importance on quality training in these significant growth sectors - and that's good news for people with a vocation. Attractive environments for people 'in care' are becoming a community priority, with a trend towards smaller and more technologically sophisticated care facilities. With career prospects mainly centred in education, government administration, defence, health and community services, TAFE SA qualifications in this area can lead to careers as: welfare and community workers; childcare workers and coordinators; natural therapy professionals; enrolled nurses; dental assistants; personal carers; and special care workers.

TAFE SA Career Groups within Community Services, Health and Education

Career Group Description
Childcare Workers Graduates in childcare can work with children from babies up to 12 years old in long day care, occasional care, family day care, out of school hours care and vacation care. The diploma course may assist in gaining entry into university.
Community Service Workers Community service workers are employed in many fields. Graduates may find themselves working in community development; community legal centres; women's or youth refuges; residential aged care services and community aged care services; and disability services including residential services, recreation programs, educational support services, advocacy, employment support services and respite services. There are also employment opportunities for graduates in social housing; out of home care settings; youth services; juvenile residential facilities; alcohol and drug services; advocacy services; mental health (non clinical) settings; and aged or disability respite services.
Health Workers These courses prepare graduates for working in the health industry in roles as diverse as patient care assistants; dental hygienists; dental technicians; dental clinic assistants; ancillary or support workers; enrolled nurses; allied health assistants (therapy assistants); and health technicians.
Library Assistants and Technicians Library assistants issue, receive and shelve library items such as books, tapes and films and maintain associated records. Library technicians are skilled library workers, working at a paraprofessional level.
Teachers' Assistants Graduates in the education course can assist teachers in the classroom and work with children from three to 15 years old (K-10). They can work in kindergarten, pre-primary, junior, middle or upper primary and in high schools. Employment may also be gained in indigenous, ethnic/multicultural or special needs schools and language intensive schools working one to one or with groups.
